Gov Jerry Brown Signs Bill that Aids Unlicensed Drivers

Personal Injury Law – State News October 14, 2011

Los Angeles- California Governor Jerry Brown has signed AB 353, a bill that prohibits the impounding of vehicles of unlicensed drivers, according to reports.

Reports said the bill, which will take effect on Jan. 1, 2010, prohibits police officers from seizing the vehicles of caught unlicensed drivers. Instead, violators will face penalties. The new law aims to protect honest families from paying expensive fines over the fault of an unlicensed member.

The new law will also correct cases wherein family members try to retrieve their cars, which are impounded for 30 days and have thousands of dollars fines, reports said.

Reports said AB 353 focuses on arresting drunk drivers at Driving Under the Influence (DUI) checkpoints instead of prying among rich undocumented teen drivers. Assemblyman Gil Cedillo wrote the AB 353 bill.
