Los Angeles – Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has recovered after undergoing surgery for his fractured elbow as a result of a bicycle accident on Venice Boulevard last July 17.

Police said the accident occurred between Hervey and Hargis Streets at around 7 p.m. while the mayor was riding on the bike lane, accompanied by his security aides.

A taxicab had apparently pulled right in front of the mayor, causing him to hit the brakes abruptly, which made him fall head first and break his elbow. The mayor was wearing helmet.

Villaraigosa was taken to UCLA Medical Center after the accident where he underwent operation the following day.

A statement issued by the mayor’s office cleared the taxicab driver of traffic violations but faulted the driver for not using signal lights. The mayor is not filing charges against the cab driver.
