Thick Fog Causes Massive I-15 Pileup

Personal Injury – Local News June 10, 2009

San Bernardino – Authorities believed the thick fog and the extreme weather condition contributed to the massive pileup at Interstate 15 near the summit of the Cajon Pass, which resulted in a number of injuries and the closing of the northbound lanes for hours.

The California Highway Patrol said the accident was triggered by a big rig that failed to stop when traffic slowed down, causing other vehicles behind to collide and slam into the big rig.

The accident resulted into a massive collision which involved 30 vehicles and spread across a half-mile section of the interstate highway. At least 15 people were reported injured.

Police said they had put out a sign warning of fog, but speeding motorists did not notice it. Ten of the injured accident victims were taken to area hospitals while the five others declined. One of the victims suffered major injuries while the rest had minor injuries.

The lanes were re-opened to traffic a few hours later after it was cleared of debris and spilled fuel.
