Pilot Error Seen in Corona Mid-Air Crash

Hesperia – The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has found two private pilots liable for the mid-air collision in Corona that killed five persons last year.

Aviation officials said the planes were on a collision course for about 13 seconds before both planes crashed head on. One Cessna was piloted by 73-year old Paul Carlson while another was being flown by 20-year old Anthony Guzman.

The NTSB found that Carlson violated the Federal Aviation Administration recommended procedures when he made a turn while Guzman had a “14-second window of opportunity” to see Carlson’s plane as it approached for landing.

The errors resulted in the tragic mid-air collision on June 20, 2008 that killed both pilots and their passengers. Another man also died when the falling wreckage went through his workplace roof.
