Los Angeles – Superior Court Judge James Chalfont has stopped the Los Angeles Unified School District teachers’ union from staging its one-day protest walkout after the judge issued a restraining order last Tuesday. The judge said the order was released to protect the health and safety of students.

District school officials had earlier asked the court to declare the work stoppage as ‘illegal, disruptive, and dangerous’.

United Teachers Los Angeles President A.J. Duffy however said the walkout is ‘a way for standing up for students”. The teachers are protesting the planned layoffs and class-size increase approved by the school board.
